The United States government has high
standards in making "Straight Bourbon Whiskey." The law states that
bourbon needs to be made in the USA, it must have a grain mix of a minimum 51%
corn, it needs to be distilled at 80% abv or less than 160 proof. It must have
no additives other than water in order to decrease the proof if necessary.
Bourbon must be aged in charred new white oak barrels. It must be aged for at
least two years.
What makes up bourbon?
Essentially, the major ingredients of
bourbon include water and distilled grain. 51% corn is also added along with
rye, malt and barley. Also, a bit of yeast is added. Also added is pure water
that is free of iron.
